The Victoria Memorial was conceived after the death of Queen Victoria in 1901 as a tribute to her reign. Lord Curzon, the then Viceroy of India, proposed its construction. Designed by William Emerson in the Indo-Saracenic architectural style, the memorial was built between 1906 and 1921. It was formally opened to the public in 1921 and has since become a significant cultural landmark.
The place is very beautiful. Ticket prices are also very reasonable (₹50 for the garden and gallery for Indian citizens and ₹500 for foreigners). The most famous place of Kolkata. It was built during the British rule. It is situated in a huge area. It will take you 1 hour to cover the entire area including the museum. It is a great place to visit, explore and enjoy nature. They maintain it very well. This monument is a symbol of the British Empire. The building, built in memory of Queen Victoria, was constructed during the period 1906 to 1921. The memorial now houses a museum, the lower part displays statues of Queen Victoria and other British dignitaries while the upper part is dedicated to India's freedom struggle. Here are displayed photographs of those martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the sake of our motherland. The memorial is situated amidst well-maintained lawns and flower gardens, providing a peaceful environment
During my recent visit to Victoria Memorial in Kolkata, I was captivated by the grandeur and beauty of this historic monument. The majestic white marble structure, set against lush green gardens, exudes a timeless elegance. Inside, the museum offers a fascinating glimpse into India’s colonial past, with well-preserved artifacts and paintings. The highlight for me was the stunning collection of artwork and the serene atmosphere, perfect for a leisurely stroll. However, the place can get quite crowded, especially on weekends. Overall, it's a must-visit for history enthusiasts and those who appreciate architectural beauty.
It is a beautiful place and it will an awesome treat to the history lovers. You will be lost in the past, if you are a visionary you will dive in the thought of how the Britishers might have been staying here. How the queen would have been visiting, what life would have been in those times. The lush green surrounding makes it an eye candy and nothing less than the dream house for anyone. The view after sunset is mesmerizing, nothing less than a British palace.
