The Asiatic Society of Bengal, founded by Sir William Jones in 1784, started a museum in 1796 at its Park Street location in Kolkata, India. Initially focused on preserving cultural and scientific artifacts, the museum quickly grew into a significant repository of natural history, archaeology, art, and ethnography. In 1814, Nathaniel Wallich, a Danish botanist, proposed a dedicated museum space and spearheaded the collection process. The Indian government supported the expansion, and a new building was commissioned in 1875, based on a design by the architectural firm Lockwood and Schilling. The current building opened in 1878, housing the vast collection under one roof. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the museum continued to expand its collections, becoming a central hub for research and education in India. Today, the Indian Museum remains a treasured institution, reflecting India's rich heritage and cultural diversity.

Very hot and humid. Except Egypt section no AC. (Egypt section is very small and except for a mummy nothing is there, only a couple of photos which are not old) Not sure why the camera is not allowed in th Egypt section but my guess is they do not want people to know that actually nothing is there. Among other sections some sculptures are good, no other sections worth a mention. Zoological and botanical section absolutely waste of time. Nothing in human evolution. If my memory serving me right then a lot was there around 30 years back when I visited last time. Only one washroom which is in pathetic condition. It probably gets cleaned once a day. Washroom and Fan/AC needs immediate attention.
I would strongly recommend every Indian to visit this place. It's so informative, if you are someone who is interested in this then i may suggest you to spend atleast a day, because there are many items to see, its the biggest one in India. Well managed by the staffs, Even the toilets are cleaner than many big hotels in Kolkata. Ticket cost per Indian is 75 rupees and for foreigners its more than 500 rupees,. You can pay another 60 rupees for camera and no need to pay for keeping your bag
Amazing place! There are so many very very interesting things separately displayed in different rooms. The most interesting thing in there is the Egyptian section. There is no photo taking allowed that's a bummer but there is a legit mummy about 4000 years old which is very fascinating watching that from this close is a very surreal experience to me. The ticket price is 75/- per head which is highly worthy. Highly recommend visiting here 😃
A beautiful place. It showcases India's rich heritage and culture. It is also engaging for science lovers. Justifiably we were not allowed use of water bottles inside the premises, but it was exhausting touring the different exhibits on such a hot and humid day given that only the Egyptian exhibit had air conditioning.
