    History

The original Yamunotri Temple is believed to have been built by Maharani Gularia of Jaipur in the 19th century. However, the temple has been rebuilt several times due to natural calamities like earthquakes and landslides that are common in the region. The current structure is relatively recent. According to Hindu mythology, Yamuna is the sister of Yama, the god of death. It is believed that taking a dip in the Yamuna River grants a painless death. The temple's history is intertwined with tales of devotion, resilience, and the enduring faith of pilgrims who brave the harsh conditions to seek blessings from Goddess Yamuna. The sacred black marble idol of the goddess adds to the temple's spiritual significance.
