The history of Nachiketa Tal is intertwined with local folklore and legends. It is believed that the lake is named after Nachiketa, a young boy from Hindu mythology known for his wisdom and courage. According to the legend, Nachiketa's father, Udalak, performed a ritual to gain knowledge. During the ritual, Nachiketa was sent to Yama, the god of death, to learn the secrets of life and death. It is said that Nachiketa meditated near this lake, and hence it was named after him. The lake is considered sacred by the locals, and a small temple dedicated to Nachiketa is situated nearby. Though historical documentation is scarce, the local stories and beliefs have kept the legend of Nachiketa alive for generations, adding a mystical aura to the lake.
