Commissioned by Diwan Mohata Nathmal, the then Prime Minister of Jaisalmer, in 1885, Nathmal Ki Haveli stands as a testament to the skills of two brothers, Hathi and Lulu. Interestingly, the brothers worked on the haveli independently; one worked on the right side, and the other on the left. This resulted in a slightly asymmetrical yet captivating facade. The story goes that they never coordinated their designs, leading to the unique differences that are now a defining characteristic of the haveli. Despite the lack of coordination, the overall structure is remarkably cohesive and aesthetically pleasing. After its completion, the haveli served as the residence for the Mohata family, contributing to its historical significance and cultural value.
