The history of Kuldhara is shrouded in legend. It's believed that the village was established in the 13th century and inhabited by the Paliwal Brahmins, a prosperous and hardworking community. According to local lore, in the 19th century, the oppressive Diwan (ruler) Salim Singh desired to marry the village chief's daughter. To protect her honor and their community, the Paliwal Brahmins collectively decided to abandon their homes overnight, cursing the village so that no one could ever resettle it. It is said that over 80 villages were deserted simultaneously. Despite numerous attempts to repopulate Kuldhara, none have been successful, fueling the belief that the curse remains active. The true reasons for the abandonment may be more complex, possibly involving water scarcity, dwindling resources, or political conflicts, but the legend adds to its allure.
