    History

Nahargarh Fort, meaning "Abode of Tigers," was originally named Sudarshangarh. Construction began in 1734 under Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, primarily for defense against enemy attacks. Legend has it that the fort's construction was hampered by the spirit of Nahar Singh Bhomia, a Rathore prince, whose land was taken for the fort. To appease his spirit, a temple was built within the fort's walls, and it was renamed Nahargarh. During the Indian Mutiny of 1857, the fort provided refuge to Europeans residing in Jaipur. Over the centuries, it underwent several expansions and renovations, reflecting the architectural styles of the ruling dynasties.

Great fort to visit at night. You can see the city lights from there. Do not take the short cut route very risky and slippery even for two wheelers. Recommend the main route. The fort needs a thorough cleaning inside and there are many old dusty windows and doors that needs to be sanitized.

Nahargarh Fort is beautiful and you can buy tickets from the counter. The timing of fort is 9:00 AM to 9 PM During my recent visit to Jaipur, I had the chance to explore Nahargarh Fort. The fort is a fascinating piece of history, showcasing the grandeur and architectural style of the dynasty. Although it’s mostly in ruins, the vast stone walls, ancient pathways, and crumbling structures give a glimpse into the past glory of this massive fort. The area is quite expansive, so it’s best to be prepared for a bit of walking. The rugged landscape and panoramic views of the surrounding areas make it worth the effort. The fort is not overly crowded, making it a good spot for a peaceful exploration of Jaipur's historical side. If you're interested in history or architecture, Nahargarh Fort is definitely a place to visit. However, it's a good idea to carry water and snacks, as there are limited facilities around the area. Exploring the fort gave me a deeper appreciation for Jaipur rich heritage and the stories that lie hidden in its ruins. A must-visit for history enthusiasts and those who enjoy offbeat locations away from the busy city center!
