Torna Fort holds immense historical significance as the first major conquest of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1646. At the young age of 16, Shivaji recognized the strategic importance of the dilapidated fort and seized it, renaming it 'Torna', meaning 'fierce'. This marked the beginning of his campaign to establish an independent Maratha kingdom. Shivaji repaired and fortified Torna, adding significant structures and strengthening its defenses. The fort served as an important base for the Maratha empire in its early years. Later, it was briefly captured by the Mughals but was subsequently recaptured by the Marathas. Torna stands as a testament to Shivaji's vision, courage, and the genesis of the Maratha empire.
