Rajmachi Fort holds significant historical importance, dating back to the Satavahana dynasty. It later came under the control of various rulers, including the Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, and Yadavas. Shivaji Maharaj recognized its strategic importance and captured it in the 17th century, strengthening its defenses. The fort served as a crucial watchtower, overseeing the trade route between Mumbai and Pune. In 1713, it was ceded to Kanhoji Angre by the Mughals. Later, it was captured by the British in 1818 during the Anglo-Maratha War. The fort's strategic location and robust fortifications played a vital role in the region's history, witnessing numerous battles and power struggles.
