Sir Mirza Ismail, the then Dewan of Mysore, conceived the idea of Brindavan Gardens in 1927, inspired by the Shalimar Gardens of Kashmir. Construction began in 1927 and was completed in 1932. The gardens were designed to enhance the beauty of the Krishnaraja Sagar Dam, built across the Cauvery River. Initially called the Krishnarajendra Terrace Gardens, they were later renamed Brindavan Gardens. Over the years, the gardens have undergone several renovations and expansions, adding new features and attractions. Today, they stand as a testament to the vision and artistry of their creators, attracting millions of visitors annually.
Mostly people come here to see the water show. That's why it is very busy in the evening. Good tourist place. Tranquil nature, well maintained gardens and plants. Picnic spot, enjoy with family and kids. Musical fountain attraction, ample open parking available. Restrooms are not kept clean but a woman collects money to use the toilet in the toilet area. May be unofficial collection. The workers are more demanding, but the cleanliness is below average. Smaller restaurants charge higher prices. The entry ticket is only Rs.50. The last one we visited was close to the Dussehra program so everywhere was decorated with lights. There were many stage programs and everything.
The garden, while not as charming as it once was, is still well-maintained, with a large variety of fish adding to its appeal. However, the water dance feature didn’t quite live up to expectations and lacked excitement. Overall, it’s a pleasant experience, especially for those who enjoy a peaceful stroll through the gardens and appreciate the effort put into maintaining the exhibits.
The Brindavan Garden at KRS Dam is an amazing spot to visit. It has a huge paid parking area, making it convenient for travelers. The garden is filled with beautifully maintained pathways, fountains, trees, and vibrant flowers. The musical fountain show in the evening is a treat to watch – truly mesmerizing! I’d recommend arriving by 4 PM to fully explore the gardens and get a good spot for the fountain show. There are also many snack stalls near the entrance for refreshments. Overall, it’s a peaceful and enjoyable experience for all age groups.
I’m sure this place used to be amazing, it’s not so anymore. It’s dirty, the water barely flows down the channels so it’s covered in moss, it’s falling apart everywhere and smells because of stagnant water, the ponds are full of litter. The gardens are overgrown with weeds and grass. I’m told this place used to be magnificent, this is what happens when you take but don’t reinvest to maintain. Only 50rp to enter for locals and foreigners, would have happily paid triple to see this place in its glory days.
