    History

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway was constructed between 1879 and 1881 to facilitate trade and transport between the plains and the hill station of Darjeeling. It was a remarkable feat of engineering, overcoming challenging terrain with innovative solutions like loops and zig-zags. The railway played a crucial role in the development of Darjeeling as a major tourist destination and continues to be an iconic symbol of the region. Initially coal-fired, some trains now use diesel engines, but the charm of the historic steam locomotives is still preserved on certain routes and joy rides.

The Darjeeling Toy Train offers a scenic and nostalgic journey through the picturesque hills of Darjeeling. It's known for its stunning views of mountains, tea gardens, and forests, providing a peaceful and beautiful ride. Riding on this UNESCO World Heritage-listed railway is like traveling back in time, experiencing the charm of an old-fashioned steam engine and the history of colonial-era railways. Along the way, you can also get a glimpse of local life and culture, which adds a deeper dimension to the journey. It's a great way to immerse yourself in the surroundings and appreciate the region's rich diversity. However, there are a few things to keep in mind. During busy times, the train can get crowded, which might affect your comfort. Maintenance issues can occasionally cause delays, and the seating, while authentic, may not be the most comfortable for long trips. Weather can also be a factor, affecting the train's schedule. It's important to plan ahead and be flexible in case of changes due to weather conditions. Overall, the Darjeeling Toy Train offers a unique and memorable experience, perfect for those who appreciate natural beauty, history, and cultural exploration.

A must-try toy train ride in Darjeeling. A majestic experience. The view of the mountains and riding amidst the houses were great experiences. The toy train station is approximately 15 to 20 minutes from Darjeeling Central Market. You can purchase the tickets at the ticket counter in the station. You have the option to choose either the steam train ride (Rs. 1500) or the diesel engine ride (Rs. 1000). The round-trip from Darjeeling to Ghum (a UNESCO world heritage site) will take 2 hours. At the Batasia Loop, we can have a clear view of Mt. Kanchenjenga. The museum entry is also included in the train ticket. The train stops in three places and will give you ample time to explore the places and click some scenic pictures. Overall, it was a thrilling experience
