The Mukteshwar Temple's history is deeply intertwined with local legends and folklore. It is believed to be centuries old, with its origins dating back to a time when sages and hermits sought solace in the Himalayan foothills. The temple's presiding deity, Lord Shiva, is revered as Mukteshwar, the 'Lord who grants freedom' (Mukti). Legend has it that Lord Shiva stayed here for sometime after killing a demon. The temple has undergone renovations and expansions over the years, reflecting the devotion of the local community. The name 'Mukteshwar' itself is derived from the temple, which has become a significant landmark in the region. The British also developed this place as research and education institute IVRI (Indian Veterinary Research Institute) in 1893.
