The Maya Devi Temple's history is deeply intertwined with the legend of Goddess Sati. According to Hindu mythology, Sati immolated herself after her father, Daksha, insulted her husband, Lord Shiva. A distraught Shiva carried Sati's body across the universe. To alleviate Shiva's grief, Lord Vishnu dismembered Sati's body, and the places where her body parts fell became known as Shaktipeethas. Haridwar is believed to be where Sati's heart and navel fell, making the Maya Devi Temple one of the most important Shaktipeethas. The temple's exact construction date is unknown, but it has been a significant pilgrimage site for centuries. Over time, the temple has undergone renovations and expansions, reflecting its continued importance in Hindu religious life.
