The history of Unakoti remains shrouded in mystery, with various legends and interpretations surrounding its creation. One popular belief suggests that a sculptor named Kalu Kumhar was tasked by Lord Shiva to carve one crore images in a single night. However, he fell short by one, hence the name Unakoti. Another legend attributes the carvings to a tribal artist. Archaeological evidence suggests that the site flourished during the 7th-9th centuries under the patronage of the Pala dynasty. Over time, the site was abandoned and reclaimed by nature, only to be rediscovered in recent times. Today, Unakoti stands as a protected archaeological site, preserving the legacy of its creators and attracting visitors from around the world.
