Following Mahatma Gandhi's assassination in 1948, his ashes were divided and sent to various parts of India for immersion in the sea. A portion of his ashes was brought to Kanyakumari. Before immersion, the ashes were kept at this site, then a raised platform, for public viewing. In 1956, the memorial was constructed to commemorate this event. The architectural design was carefully planned to honor Gandhi's ideals and principles. The central structure was designed by Shri S.K. Achari, who ensured that on Gandhi's birthday, October 2nd, the sun's rays would fall directly on the spot where the urn containing his ashes was placed. This thoughtful design symbolizes the enduring impact of Gandhi's life and teachings on India and the world.
