Nokrek National Park

Nokrek's history is intertwined with the Garo tribes who have inhabited the region for centuries, relying on the forest for sustenance and cultural practices. Recognizing its ecological significance, Nokrek was declared a National Park in 1986. Later, in 2009, it was designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, acknowledging its importance in conserving biodiversity and promoting sustainable development. The discovery of Citrus indica, a wild ancestor of cultivated citrus fruits, further heightened its conservation value. The park's management focuses on protecting its unique flora and fauna, involving local communities in conservation efforts, and promoting eco-tourism to generate sustainable livelihoods.
