The Gateway of India was erected to commemorate the landing of King George V and Queen Mary at Apollo Bunder on their visit to India in 1911. However, they only saw a cardboard model of the final structure. The foundation stone for the Gateway of India was laid in March 1911. The final design of architect George Wittet was sanctioned in 1914, and construction was completed in 1924. The last British troops to leave India following independence passed through the Gateway in a symbolic ceremony in 1948, signifying the end of British rule. Today, the Gateway of India stands as a reminder of India's rich history and a symbol of Mumbai.

The Gateway of India Mumbai is the first and most famous place you have to visit if you visit Mumbai. It's always crowded here. There's no entry fee. You have to pass through a screening that's all. The Gateway is just by the seashore. There are boating in motor boats from this place. For one round it costs Rs 90. It takes around 30 minutes. Speed boat costs around Rs 3500. There's also a boat going to Elephanta cave from here. The boats are available in plenty and there's not much waiting time. Tickets can be purchased on the spot. They don't have GPay or card swipe machines. Only cash is accepted. The Taj hotel nearby can also be seen from outside.
Beautiful space to explore. We arrived early in the morning to avoid the crowds. I'm so glad we did. There a number of photographers available to take DSLR photos of you and your group. Multiple requests becomes annoying after a while. But it's a nice option if you'd like it.
