The Byculla Zoo was established in 1861, making it one of the oldest zoos in India. Originally known as the Victoria Gardens, it was renamed in honor of Veermata Jijabai, the mother of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Over the years, the zoo has undergone several renovations and expansions. The introduction of the penguin enclosure in 2016 was a significant addition, drawing large crowds. The zoo continues to play a vital role in wildlife conservation and education, contributing to the preservation of endangered species and raising public awareness about the importance of biodiversity.
Can expect well-maintained exhibits and a diverse range of animals, with ample signage and informative displays. Decent restrooms. Option for booking your tickets available on both counters as well as digital (Ticket vending machine)..However, crowds can be a concern during peak times, and some areas might need better upkeep. I'll suggest visiting this place on weekdays to avoid the Hassle.. Overall, it offers a worthwhile visit for nature enthusiasts and families alike.
Plan for EVENING as most of the animals are asleep in morning and noon. Good zoo to spend time. Half a day is best. Some animal exhibits empty so manage your expectations. One of few places to see a great botanical collection of trees if you like in Mumbai. Basic fare of 50 for Indians. Foreigners pay Rs400. Directions to exhibits can be helpful. Pack a lunch for a picnic.
A peaceful retreat from the busy life of Mumbai. Despite its name as a zoo, only elephants, tigers, bears, crocodile, hippopotamus and deer and few species of birds can be seen there. So it's hard for me to describe zoo. I recommend Mysore Zoo for those who are very keen to visit the zoo. But I could see some very special penkins here. I felt more importance was given to rest areas. The arrangements are done there with great precision. There is also a museum nearby but I could not visit the museum as it was closed by that time(5.30 pm) But I felt that such a sight is very rare in such a busy city. Eating and bathroom facilities are available inside. There the board saw that the lion and the jackal would be brought immediately. There is a machine there to buy tickets online, from which you can scan the QR code and buy tickets
Zoo is good for children, the best part is newly arrived Penguin. However few animals like Elephant, Lion were missing. Monkeys are very limited. There are 2 eateries inside and drinking water available at many spots. Fee is 50Rs pp. Car parking is available inside with 20 Rs charge.
