The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya was founded in the early years of the 20th century by prominent citizens of Mumbai, with the help of the then Governor of Bombay, Lord Sydenham. The museum building is built in the Indo-Saracenic style of architecture, incorporating elements of other styles of architecture like Mughal, Maratha and Jain. The museum was opened to the public in 1922 by the then Prince of Wales, Edward VIII. It was renamed to its present name in 1998. The museum has undergone several renovations and expansions since its opening. A new wing was added in 2019. The museum is now a major tourist attraction in Mumbai.

Well maintained museums and different kinds of collections are available. Extension of the museum is also really good( coin collection, cloth collection etc). It will take a half day to completely visit everything. Overall three stories building people can buy audio guide as well at affordable price( 200- 300). Toilet is clean. Overall cleanliness was maintained very well. With a normal ticket a person can take a photo of the artifacts in the museum.
This museum is a treasure trove of art, history, and culture, offering a fascinating journey through time. From ancient artifacts to historic weapons, rare stamps, and beautiful gems, each display tells its own story. There’s also a rich collection showcasing Harappan culture, along with detailed explanations and books that bring history to life. Art lovers and history buffs will find endless inspiration here, so I highly recommend setting aside at least three hours to fully explore. Take your time to read the stories behind each exhibit—it’s a truly memorable experience!
This place has improved a lot. It is upto international standards with all the signages, markings and cleanliness. The exhibits are really fascinating. The Mumbai exhibition has been the highlight for me as it really plays well with the city data visualization. The different themes in this museum are equally fascinating. Architecture is very beautiful.
