Maheshwar served as the capital of the Holkar dynasty under the reign of the legendary Queen Ahilyabai Holkar from 1767 to 1795. She transformed Maheshwar into a center of art, culture, and commerce. The fort was significantly developed during her rule, with the addition of numerous temples, ghats, and public works.
