The handloom weaving tradition in Maheshwar dates back to the 18th century when Rani Ahilya Bai Holkar, the ruler of Indore, established the industry to provide livelihood to women and revive the local economy. She invited skilled weavers from Surat and other regions to settle in Maheshwar and develop unique designs. The queen herself was deeply involved in the process, often designing the sarees and specifying the patterns. The Maheshwari saree, characterized by its lightweight texture, reversible border, and distinctive motifs like stripes, checks, and floral patterns, quickly gained popularity. Over the centuries, the weaving tradition has been preserved and passed down through families, making Maheshwar a prominent center for handloom textiles in India.
