    History

Edakkal caves are believed to have formed naturally. The carvings inside the caves are from the Neolithic and Mesolithic periods, dating back to at least 6,000 BCE. These petroglyphs depict human and animal figures, tools, and other symbols. The caves were likely used as shelters by early humans and later became important for trade routes connecting Mysore and the Malabar coast. The historical significance of the caves lies in the ancient rock carvings, which provide insights into the lives and culture of prehistoric people in the region. The caves have been studied by archaeologists and historians for many years, and they continue to be a valuable source of information about the past.

Good place for people who don't regret climbing a lot of stairs. It's more like trekking. The actual caves aren't that good, but the way that leads to the caves is beautiful. I won't recommend this place for aged people as it can affect their joints and knees

Edakkal Cave offers an unforgettable experience, especially during the uphill trek. The walk is challenging but equally rewarding, with steep paths and rocky terrain that push your endurance. However, the cool, crisp air and the tranquility of the surrounding nature make it all worthwhile. The silence of the forest, broken only by the sounds of birds and the rustling of leaves, adds to the peaceful ambiance. As you ascend, the breathtaking views of the greenery and distant hills make every step enjoyable. It's the perfect blend of adventure and nature, leaving you feeling accomplished and rejuvenated.

The Edakkal Caves offer a unique blend of history, adventure, and natural beauty. Situated about 2 kilometers up a mountain, the journey to the caves is a bit challenging but rewarding. The hike itself is invigorating, with scenic views of lush greenery and the Western Ghats unfolding as you ascend. After the initial trek, you'll face 340 steps leading up to the caves—an effort that might seem daunting, but the experience is well worth it. Once you reach the caves, you're treated to an ancient marvel, with rock engravings dating back thousands of years. The artwork inside the caves is fascinating, offering a glimpse into prehistoric life. But the real highlight is the viewpoint near the caves, where you are rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding hills and valleys. The sense of achievement combined with the stunning scenery makes the climb all the more memorable.

Very nice place to visit. It is a historical place and need to walk around 350 steps to reach the cave. There is an entry fee for tourists. The steps are stiff and one needs to be careful. The approach from the car parking to entry gate had lots of shops for buying different items including food items. However be careful about the monkeys.
