Legend says that Parasurama, after reclaiming land from the sea, threw his axe into the water, which landed at Thiruvallam, marking the spot for the temple. It's believed to be one of the 108 Siva temples consecrated by Parasurama. The temple has undergone renovations and expansions over the centuries under various rulers, while retaining its core sanctity. The annual 'Arattu' festival, a grand procession carrying the deity's idol, is a major highlight, attracting thousands of devotees.
