The Shimla State Museum was originally established in 1974 at Inverarm, the former residence of the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army. It was later shifted to its current location, a historic building constructed in 1955. Initially, the museum housed a collection of Pahari miniatures, sculptures, and bronzes. Over the years, its collection has expanded significantly through donations and acquisitions. The museum building, designed in the traditional architectural style of Himachal Pradesh, complements the historical artifacts it houses. It stands as a testament to the region's rich cultural heritage and serves as an important center for research and education.
