Kangra Fort boasts a history spanning over a thousand years, tracing back to the Katoch dynasty, who claim descent from the ancient Trigarta Kingdom mentioned in the Mahabharata. It withstood numerous sieges and attacks throughout its existence, including those by Mahmud of Ghazni, the Delhi Sultanate, and the Mughal Empire. The fort's strategic importance made it a coveted prize for various rulers. In 1786, it fell under the control of Raja Sansar Chand II, who restored much of its former glory. However, it later came under Sikh rule and eventually British control. The devastating 1905 Kangra earthquake caused significant damage, but the fort's resilient structure continues to stand as a symbol of its enduring legacy.
