New Digha Sea Beach

Digha, originally known as Beerkul, was discovered by the British in the late 18th century. Warren Hastings, the first Governor-General of British India, was captivated by its beauty and described it as the 'Brighton of the East' in his letters. The development of Digha as a tourist spot gained momentum in the 20th century. New Digha was developed later to accommodate the growing influx of tourists and to provide a more spacious and less congested beach experience. The West Bengal government played a significant role in developing the infrastructure and promoting tourism in the region, leading to its popularity as a major beach destination in Eastern India. Over the years, it has transformed from a sleepy fishing village to a bustling tourist hub.
