Lansdowne was founded in 1887 by Lord Lansdowne, the then Viceroy of India, and initially served as a recruiting center for the Garhwal Rifles. The town quickly developed into a cantonment, housing the regiment's headquarters. Its strategic location and pleasant climate made it a favored spot for British officials during the colonial era. Many of the buildings constructed during this time, such as the Garhwali Mess and St. Mary's Church, still stand today, offering a glimpse into the town's colonial past. Even after India's independence, Lansdowne has maintained its military significance and continues to be the home of the Garhwal Rifles Regimental Centre. The town's history is intertwined with the legacy of the British Raj and the bravery of the Garhwali soldiers.
