Built in 1844, St. John in the Wilderness Church is one of the oldest churches in Nainital. It was founded by Daniel Wilson, the Bishop of Calcutta. Tragically, a landslide in 1880 claimed many lives, including that of the church's chaplain, and a memorial inside the church commemorates the victims. The church's name reflects its initial isolated location, although Nainital's growth has since enveloped it. Despite its age, the church remains an active place of worship and a significant landmark in Nainital's history, attracting visitors with its serene ambiance and historical significance.
