Adi Shankaracharya, an early 8th-century Indian philosopher and theologian, is credited with consolidating the doctrine of Advaita Vedanta. He traveled extensively across India, establishing four cardinal mathas ('monasteries') which played a key role in the historical development, propagation, and revival of Advaita Vedanta. After his travels, he reached Kedarnath, where he is believed to have attained liberation (moksha) at the young age of 32. The Samadhi marks the spot where he is said to have merged with the divine. Over time, the original structure was lost and recently rebuilt after the devastating 2013 floods, serving as a reminder of his profound impact on Hindu philosophy and spirituality.
