The Mayawati Ashram was founded in 1899 by Swami Vivekananda's disciples, Captain James Henry Sevier and his wife Charlotte Sevier. Inspired by Vivekananda's teachings on Advaita Vedanta, they sought to create a place for spiritual practice and dissemination of his message. Vivekananda himself visited the ashram in 1901. The ashram became a significant center for publishing and spreading Vedanta literature. Prabuddha Bharata, an English-language monthly journal of the Ramakrishna Order, has been published from here since its inception. Over the years, the ashram has continued to serve as a sanctuary for spiritual seekers and a center for learning and contemplation, upholding the ideals of Swami Vivekananda.
