    History

    Agra Fort was originally a brick fort, held by the Chauhan Rajputs. It was mentioned for the first time in 1080 AD. After the First Battle of Panipat in 1526, Babur stayed in the fort. Later, Emperor Akbar rebuilt the fort with red sandstone, starting in 1565. It took eight years to complete. Shah Jahan, Akbar's grandson, added many of the white marble structures within the fort.
