The history of the Basilica is rooted in three miracles believed to have occurred in the 16th and 17th centuries. The first miracle involves the apparition of the Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus to a shepherd boy delivering milk. The second miracle tells of Mary saving Portuguese sailors from a violent storm in the Bay of Bengal. In gratitude, they built a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Good Health. The third miracle involves a crippled woman who was miraculously healed after bathing in the local spring. Over time, the small chapel was expanded into a grand basilica, attracting devotees from across the globe. The annual feast held from August 29th to September 8th commemorates these miracles and draws millions of pilgrims, solidifying Velankanni's place as a significant religious center.
