The Thirukkandiyur Temple has a rich history dating back to the Chola period, with later contributions from the Pandya and Vijayanagara dynasties. The temple's primary legend revolves around Lord Shiva being relieved of his Brahmahatya Dosha (the sin of killing a Brahmin) at this very spot. It is believed that Lord Brahma's skull got stuck to Lord Shiva's hand and he wandered across places to get rid of that. Finally, at this place, the skull fell off, and Lord Shiva was relieved from his curse. The temple's inscriptions provide valuable insights into the socio-economic conditions and religious practices of the time. Over the centuries, the temple has undergone several renovations and expansions, reflecting the patronage of various rulers and devotees.
