    History

The history of Agni Theertham is deeply intertwined with the epic Ramayana. Legend says that Lord Agni (the God of Fire) cleansed himself of sin at this very spot after proving Sita's purity. It is believed that Sita, after being rescued from Ravana, had to undergo a trial by fire to prove her chastity. Agni, by embracing her, was tainted by the sin of touching a pure soul. To absolve himself, he came to Rameswaram and bathed in the sea, which then became known as Agni Theertham. Since then, devotees have flocked to this holy place to cleanse themselves of their wrongdoings and seek spiritual purification. The temple nearby further enhances the spiritual aura of the location.
