The history of Idumban Temple is closely linked to the legend of Idumban, a loyal devotee of Lord Murugan. According to the legend, Sage Agastya entrusted Idumban with carrying two hills, Shivagiri and Shakthigiri (now part of Palani), to his abode in the South. Idumban carried the hills on his shoulders, suspended by a kavadi. When Idumban rested near Palani, he found that he could not lift the hills again. He then encountered a young boy (Lord Murugan) who claimed ownership of the hills. In the ensuing battle, Idumban was slain. Later, Murugan restored Idumban to life and granted him the boon that anyone visiting the Palani Murugan Temple should first worship Idumban. This established the tradition of visiting the Idumban Temple before proceeding to Palani, solidifying its historical and religious importance.
