The Ekambareswarar Temple boasts a rich history dating back to the Pallava dynasty. Later, the Cholas and Vijayanagara kings contributed significantly to its expansion and architectural grandeur. The existing structure is largely attributed to the Vijayanagara period. The temple has been mentioned in ancient Tamil texts, solidifying its importance as a religious and cultural center for centuries. Legend says that Goddess Parvati worshipped Lord Shiva under a mango tree. The mango tree inside the temple is believed to be a descendant of the original tree and is revered for its four different types of mangoes, each with a unique taste.
