The Vellode Birds Sanctuary was officially established in 1996, recognizing the ecological significance of the Vellode irrigation tank. The tank has historically served as a crucial water source for agriculture in the surrounding region, inadvertently creating a suitable habitat for a variety of bird species. Over time, the area became a favored spot for both local and migratory birds. The local community recognized the importance of protecting this natural asset, leading to the establishment of the sanctuary. Since its inception, the sanctuary has undergone several improvements to enhance the visitor experience and improve the habitat for the birds. These efforts include the construction of watchtowers, the creation of walking trails, and the implementation of conservation measures. The sanctuary continues to be a collaborative effort between the forest department, local communities, and conservation organizations.
