The construction of Umaid Bhawan Palace began in 1929 and was completed in 1943. Maharaja Umaid Singh commissioned the palace to provide employment to the people of Jodhpur during a prolonged drought and famine. Designed by British architect Henry Lanchester, the palace is a masterpiece of Indo-Deco architecture. It was built using Chittar sandstone, also known as golden sandstone, which gives the palace its distinctive golden hue. After its completion, it served as the principal residence of the Jodhpur royal family. In 1971, a portion of the palace was converted into a heritage hotel, allowing visitors to experience the royal lifestyle. Today, Umaid Bhawan Palace stands as a symbol of Jodhpur's rich history and architectural heritage.
