    History

Kishangarh was founded as a princely state in 1611 by Kishan Singh, a Rathore Rajput. The city flourished under the patronage of its rulers, particularly Maharaja Sawant Singh (1748-1764), who was a devotee of Krishna and a poet. His love for his mistress, Bani Thani, inspired the distinctive Kishangarh style of miniature painting, characterized by its idealized and graceful figures. Bani Thani, known for her beauty, became the model for these paintings. The state acceded to the Dominion of India in 1949 and became part of Rajasthan. Today, Kishangarh retains its artistic heritage and is also a major center for marble processing and trade.
