The Gahirmatha coast has been known for its Olive Ridley turtle nesting for centuries, but the official recognition and protection came much later. Declared a sanctuary in 1997, the Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary was established to safeguard the Olive Ridley turtles from poaching and habitat destruction.
