The Great Indian Bustard Sanctuary in Nannaj was established in 1979 by the Maharashtra state government, primarily to protect the dwindling population of the Great Indian Bustard. The species was on the brink of extinction due to habitat loss, hunting, and agricultural expansion. Nannaj was chosen as the location for the sanctuary due to its relatively undisturbed grassland ecosystem, which provided a suitable habitat for the bustard. Over the years, the sanctuary has faced numerous challenges, including encroachment, grazing pressure, and changes in land use. Conservation efforts have focused on habitat management, community involvement, and awareness programs. Despite these efforts, the bustard population remains critically low, highlighting the urgent need for continued and intensified conservation measures. The sanctuary's history reflects the ongoing struggle to protect a flagship species in the face of increasing environmental pressures.
