The history of Alexander Point is intertwined with the development of Matheran as a hill station during the British Raj. Matheran was discovered in 1850 by Hugh Poyntz Malet, the then District Collector of Thane. Soon after its discovery, the British developed Matheran as a retreat from the summer heat. Alexander Point, named after a British officer or personality of that era (though specific records are scarce), quickly became a popular spot for enjoying the scenic views. Like other viewpoints in Matheran, it served as a place for relaxation and recreation for the British elite and their families.
