The construction of Sindhudurg Fort began in 1664 under the supervision of Shivaji Maharaj. Its primary purpose was to establish a strong Maratha naval presence along the Konkan coast and to protect the region from foreign invaders, particularly the British, Portuguese, and Siddi fleets. Over 4000 mounds of iron were used in its construction to ensure its strength and durability against sea erosion. Shivaji personally oversaw the construction and even had his hand and footprints imprinted in mortar. The fort served as a crucial naval base for the Maratha Empire and played a significant role in their maritime strategies. After Shivaji's death, the fort remained under Maratha control and witnessed various battles and sieges before eventually falling under British rule.
