Pachmarhi's history is intertwined with both mythology and colonial influence. Legend has it that the Pandava brothers of the Mahabharata epic sought refuge in these hills during their exile. The caves, some adorned with ancient paintings, bear witness to this rich past. However, Pachmarhi gained prominence during British rule when Captain James Forsyth of the Bengal Lancers discovered it in 1857. The British developed it as a sanatorium and a military cantonment, leaving behind colonial-era architecture that still graces the town. Today, Pachmarhi stands as a testament to its historical significance, blending ancient legends with colonial charm.
