The Malampuzha Dam project was conceived in the mid-20th century to harness the waters of the Bharathapuzha River for irrigation and power generation. Construction began in 1949 and was completed in 1955. The dam's primary purpose was to provide a reliable water source for agriculture in the Palakkad district, known as the 'Rice Bowl of Kerala'. Over time, the area surrounding the dam was developed into a tourist attraction. The gardens were carefully designed and landscaped, incorporating artistic elements and recreational facilities. The addition of sculptures, particularly the iconic 'Yakshi', further enhanced the gardens' appeal. The ropeway and other attractions were added later to cater to the growing number of visitors, transforming Malampuzha into a prominent tourism hub in Kerala.
