Built in 1568 by the Paradesi Jews, or "Foreign Jews," the synagogue stands as a testament to the long-standing Jewish presence in Kochi. These Jews, primarily of Spanish and Portuguese origin, were descendants of those expelled from Iberia in the late 15th century. The synagogue was partially destroyed in 1662 during Portuguese rule but was rebuilt two years later by the Dutch. Over the centuries, the synagogue has undergone several renovations and expansions, reflecting the evolving needs and contributions of the Jewish community. Today, it serves as a reminder of a once thriving community, although the number of Cochin Jews has dwindled significantly due to emigration.
