The St. Aloysius Chapel was built in 1885 as part of St. Aloysius College, a Jesuit institution founded in 1880. The chapel's construction was spearheaded by Fr. Joseph Willy, S.J., the then-rector of the college. The highlight of the chapel's history is undoubtedly the arrival of Antonio Moscheni, an Italian Jesuit artist, in 1899. Moscheni, already renowned for his work in Europe, spent over two years meticulously painting the chapel's interior. He used oil paints on canvas, which were then affixed to the walls and ceilings. The paintings survived remarkably well, with only minimal restoration needed over the years. The chapel stands as a testament to the Jesuit order's commitment to education and art, and a symbol of Mangaluru's cosmopolitan history.
