The museum was established to preserve and exhibit the numerous archaeological finds discovered during excavations and explorations in and around Halebidu. Halebidu, once the glorious capital of the Hoysala Empire (12th-14th centuries), was sacked twice by the Delhi Sultanate, leading to its decline. The museum's collection largely comprises remnants from this period, rescued from the ruins. It serves as a repository for sculptures, inscriptions, and other artifacts that shed light on the Hoysala dynasty's artistic achievements, religious beliefs, and socio-cultural practices. The museum is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
