Established in 1943, Vidyarthi Bhavan started as a humble canteen catering to students and intellectuals. Over the decades, it has become a beloved institution, with generations returning for its unchanged recipes and nostalgic ambiance. Its walls have witnessed countless conversations, debates, and memories, making it an integral part of Bangalore's cultural fabric.
It offers a truly iconic South Indian breakfast experience. I tried their famous butter masala dosa 😋, which was perfectly crisp, golden brown, and coated with butter. The potato filling was mildly spiced and paired well with their chutney. The nostalgic atmosphere and efficient service added to the charm, making the visit worthwhile despite the crowd. If you love dosas, this place is a must-visit. Definitely a memorable experience and worth the wait!
A Nostalgic Culinary Experience at a Legendary Bengaluru Eatery. For a true taste of Bengaluru’s culinary heritage, this iconic spot is a must-visit, especially for masala dosa lovers. Stepping inside, you’ll be transported back in time by the charmingly old-school interiors. The retro atmosphere, with its tiny wooden tables and chairs, that adds to the experience. Service here is impeccable, with waiters clad in traditional attire, delivering a touch of elegance. The star of the menu is undoubtedly the masala dosa, presented in a way that’s as eye-catching. But poori sagu – a hidden gem that often goes unnoticed in the shadow of the dosa’s popularity. And a piping hot filter coffee for a perfect finish. While the food is outstanding, be prepared for a wait, especially on weekends when the token system means long queues. For solo diners, you can skip the token and find a seat quickly. Weekday visits are recommended for a more relaxed experience, as the crowds tend to be lighter. Open both mornings and evenings, this beloved restaurant promises a delightful journey into the flavors and traditions of Namma Bengaluru.
This place is guaranteed to show or remind you of old Bangalore. Lots of great art inside. But the main purpose is to have food. And the food is just decent. Parking will be an issue. Crowd too. If you want to beat the crowd, get there around 7:30 AM or earlier.
This is one of those iconic spots with a preserved rustic charm that I love. The place is well-maintained and clean. Be prepared to wait in line on weekends, but luckily, they have a coupon system to manage the crowd even with that one weekends keep a buffer of 30-45 minutes. Some menu items are excellent, like the udin vada, kesari bath and coffee, though the menu is quite limited, and not all items are available throughout the day. The dosa is just okay, but it's amusing to watch the waiters carry 20-30 dosas at once. I have never been in luck to try the idli. Also I absolutely love their style of serving udin vada in small steel plates with sambar. The place is so popular that there’s even a song on it, go search on YouTube! But there are definitely better places on bangalore with a better and wider menu assortment
