    History

The original fort is believed to be over 3,000 years old, with some accounts attributing its initial construction to Raja Bahulochan. However, the present structure was mostly built by the Dogra rulers, particularly Maharaja Gulab Singh in the 19th century. The fort has witnessed several battles and changes of power over the centuries. The temple within the fort, dedicated to the goddess Bawe Wali Mata (a form of Kali), is considered a powerful spiritual site and attracts many pilgrims. The fort's strategic location played a significant role in the defense of Jammu.
